On May 12, 2022, Council approved a FoodCycler Pilot Program to run in the summer of 2022. This means that 100 households will be eligible to purchase a countertop composter at a discounted price of $175 +HST.

Registration to participate in the FoodCycler pilot program is now closed. Thank you to everyone who registered. Successful households will be contacted by the Township within the month of June.

If selected to participate in the program, you will be agreeing to the following commitments:

  • Participation in the 12-week pilot program
  • Purchase a FoodCycler unit for $175 +HST
  • Completion of three (3) online surveys:
    • at the beginning of the program
    • at the end of the program
    • and 6 months after the program ends
  • Maintain and be fully responsible for the FoodCycler unit, during and after the pilot program.

PLEASE NOTE: Only one (1) FoodCycler unit will be provided per household and you must be a resident of Minden Hills to participate. Completing the registration form does not guarantee participation in the program. Only those chosen to participate in the 2022 FoodCycler Pilot Program will be contacted by the Township.

What is a FoodCycler?

The FoodCycler is a residential device that quickly composts food waste into a finished compost product. The unit is approximately 32cm x 27.94cm x36.07cm (approximately the size of a bread maker) and can handle about 2 litres of food waste at a time. Through the use of electricity, the device dries and grinds food waste into a dry, odourless, nutrient-dense by-product that is significantly reduced in weight and volume. The end product can be used as a fertilizer that can be added to your soil, and is free from bacteria, seeds and food-borne pathogens. Each “cycle” of composting takes approximately four to eight hours, and uses approximately 0.8 kilowatt hours (kWhs).

The FoodCycler is viewed as a complement to (not a replacement of) backyard composters and digesters. For more information on how you can use the unit, please visit https://www.foodcycler.com/.
