Subject: Programs and Activities at the Minden Hills Cultural Centre July 2024
The Minden Hills Museum & Heritage Village and Nature’s Place (176 Bobcaygeon Rd., Minden) offers new and returning drop-in programming activities and events throughout July. We are open Tuesday to Saturday between 10 am – 4 pm. Pre-registration is not required, and admission is by donation. All ages are welcome for all the activities, unless specified.
New Programs and Activities
Early Settler Baking: Join us in the Bowron House’s kitchen for a demonstration of traditional early settler baking techniques and taste the authentic flavors of recipes from the early days. Available on Thursday, July 4 and 25 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Multilingual Schoolhouse: In the instructor-led beginner classes every Wednesday morning, learn basic greetings and simple expressions in a different language in our historic one room schoolhouse. No language level is required. Available every Wednesday, July 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Traveling Doctor’s Bag: Come join us for a fascinating look inside an early traveling doctor's bag and discover the medical tools and practices of early settlers. Available on Tuesday, July 16 from 2- 3 p.m.
Bottle Music: In this fun and interactive session, we will transform ordinary bottles into extraordinary instruments and create captivating melodies together! Available on Wednesday, July 17 from 2- 3 p.m.
Toddler Discovery Zone: Toddler-friendly (1-6 years old) activities each Friday morning (10 a.m. – 12 p.m.) allows your little ones to explore and discover through engaging sensory experiences. The following is a list of activities for the day: Cyanotype paper on July 5, Bubble Blower Painting on July 12, Sensory Art on July 19, Cupcake Flowers on July 26, and Rainbow Scratch Paper on August 2.
“Don’t forget the Family Storytime held by the Library - Minden Branch (10:15 – 10:45 a.m. every Friday). Our Toddler Discovery Zone is still available after the family storytime is over.”
Returning Program Activities
Laundry Day: Scrub! Scrub! Scrub! Come check out how laundry was done back over 100 years ago! Available at 11 a.m. on July 11 and August 1.
Butter in a Jar & Ice Cream Making: Make butter and ice cream the old-fashioned way! Spoiler alert: there will be work. Butter in a Jar starts at 11 a.m. every Tuesday (July 2, 9,16, 23 & 30), and Ice Cream making starts at 2 p.m. every Friday (July 5, 12, 19, 26 & August 2).
Croquet Champion: Challenge your peers with a game of croquet and see who will claim the title as the Croquet Champion! Available at 2 p.m. on July 4 and 24.
Mini-Scarecrow: Build your mini-scarecrows using straw and fabric. Use them to protect your gardens from unwanted critters. Available at 2 p.m. on July 9 and 25.
Learning Cursive: Cursive can be beautiful and fun to learn. Join us at the schoolhouse to learn cursive writing and become a pro. Available at 11 a.m. on July 6, 20 and August 3.
Crocheting a Square: Explore the history of crocheting and learn to crochet a square. Suitable for ages 5 to 14. All materials are provided. Available at 11 a.m. on July 13 and 27.
Experiments with Science: Let's get messy and conduct your own experiment! Take part in a volcanic eruption simulation at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, or create your own Oobleck mixture with cornstarch at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30.
Exploring Climate Change: Our world has been experiencing drastic environmental changes in recent decades. Learn some key concepts of this global phenomenon and how you can help! Available at 2 p.m. on July 6 and August 3.
Adventure Maps: Want to join a scavenger hunt? Join us for Adventure Maps. Learn the principles of cartography and how to map your surroundings. You may win a prize too. Available at 2 p.m. on July 3 and 31.
Tie Dye 101: Discover cool designs that you can do on fabric with tie dye. Bring a plain T-shirt or a handkerchief. Available at 11 a.m. on July 18 and 2 p.m. on July 27.
Rock Painting: Ready to rock the world with your artistic skills? Or are you just here for a Zen rock painting session? Come join us and show us what you can do with rocks. Available at 2 p.m. on July 2, 13 and 23.
