Subject: Minden Hills Cultural Centre - August Programs
The Minden Hills Museum & Heritage Village and Nature’s Place continues to have fun and exciting daily programming activities and events throughout August. We are open Tues to Sat between 10 AM and 4 PM. Admission is by donation. No pre-registration is required for any programs and events.
Heritage Programs
Butter in a Jar and Ice Cream Making: Join us and learn to make butter and ice cream the old-fashioned way. Spoiler alert: there will be work! Children are welcome. Butter in a Jar is Aug 9th, 16th, and 23rd at 11 AM, while Ice Cream Making is on Aug 11th, and 18th, and Sept 1st at 2 PM.
Planting 101: Come join us in the heritage garden to learn gardening basics, including planting the seeds and providing care. Available on Aug 10th and 19th at 11 AM.
Dress to Impress: A variety of period costumes of different historic eras will send you back in time. Come on down and try them out! Available on Aug 15th.
Natural Heritage and Craft Activities
Experiments with nature, Volcanoes: What are igneous rocks? How are they formed? Come see our rock collections and observe a volcanic eruption simulation! You can also conduct your own volcanic experiment. Available on Aug 12th and 23rd, and Sept 2nd at 2 PM.
A series of instructor-led crafts activities that let you get creative and show off your craft skills. Bring home your prized piece or give it to your friend. Families are welcome. All supplies are provided. Rock Painting is available on Aug 12th, and 26th at 11 AM. Mini-Scarecrow is available on Aug 17th August at 2 PM, and Aug 29th at 11 AM. Paper Plate Birds is available on Aug 5th at 2 PM.
New Programs in August
Calligraphy Club: Cursive can be beautiful and fun to learn. Join the Calligraphy Club to learn cursive writing and become a pro! Available on Aug 18th, and 31st at 11 AM.
Experiments with Science, Oobleck: Let’s get messy! Learn about density and viscosity by making your own oobleck mixture with cornstarch. Great for families. Available on Aug 8th and 29th at 2 PM.
Crocheting a Square: Starting with the basics, you will learn to crochet a square. We will also cover the history on crocheting. Suitable for ages 8 to 11. All materials are provided. Available on Aug 17th, and 30th at 11 AM.
Bracelet Making: Come on and create a cool friendship bracelet and learn about the origin and tradition of bracelet making. Available on Aug 8th and 22nd at 11 AM, and Aug 31st at 2 PM.
Move & Groove: Come Join us and learn some super fun dance moves. Move your body and show us what you got! Available on Aug 5th and 24th, and Sept 2nd at 11AM.
Tie Dye 101: Come and learn cool designs that you can do on fabric with tie dye. All ages are welcome. Bring a plain T-shirt or a handkerchief. Available on Aug 11th and 25th and Sept 1st at 11 AM.
Adventure Maps: Want to join a scavenger hunt? Join us for Adventure Maps! Learn the principles of cartography and how to map your surroundings. You may win a prize too! Suitable for children. Available on Aug 16th, and 30th at 2 PM.
Exploring Climate Change: Our world has been experiencing unprecedented environmental changes in recent decades. Learn some key concepts of this global phenomenon and how you can help! Available on Aug 9th and 15th at 2 PM.
Special Events on Site
Tea Party: It's teatime! The volunteers at the Minden Hills Cultural Centre will be enjoying a cup of tea in period costumes in Bowron House inside the village. Feel free to join the party and have a cup of tea with us! Available on Aug 5th at 2 PM.
Movie Night @ the village: Bring a lawn chair and a blanket and join us in the village for the movie nights. They will be screened on Aug 10th and 24th starting at dusk. All ages are welcome!
Haliburton County Public Library: Drag Queen Story Time: The Haliburton County Public Library, Minden Branch invites a special guest, Auntie Plum, to join us for a Drag Queen Story Time in celebration of Minden Pride. Available on Aug 22nd at 3 PM. All ages are welcome! No pre-registration is required. Event will be at the village.
The Turtle Guardians: Live exhibits and presentations by turtle experts: The Turtle Guardians are showcasing live turtles and teaching us about what threatens turtles and what we can do to help our shelled friends. Available on Aug 19th and 26th from noon to 2 PM.
