Community Services Department

Operator

We are currently accepting resumes for an Operator in the Community Services Department.

Reporting to the Director of Community Services, or designate(s), the Community Services Operator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the community recreation facilities, parks, and cemeteries.

This is a full time, union position, based on a forty (40) hour work week, being variable shifts, including days, evenings, weekends and Statutory holidays as required. The current rate of pay is $24.60/hour as per LOCAL 4286 Collective Agreement. Earnings will be subject to Union dues. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of Grade 12.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a Municipal recreation facilities, parks, and cemeteries environment, including a minimum of six (6) months to one (1) year experience operating an Ice Resurfacer and related parks equipment.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, the following certifications are required: Basic Refrigeration, Propane Handling & Safety, Chainsaw Safety Awareness and Fall Protection Awareness.
  • Thorough knowledge of equipment, vehicles, materials and processes used in operating Municipal facilities, parks, and cemeteries.
  • Possession of a valid “D” Driver’s License for the Province of Ontario.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ontario Recreation Facilities Association and/or Parks & Recreation Ontario coursework completion certificate(s).
  • Good understanding of all policies, procedures, best practices, by-laws, Ministry guidelines, regulations and legislation related to the operation of facilities, parks, and cemeteries and facilities equipment and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook.

The position requires the operation of equipment and undertaking of construction and maintenance projects in variable weather conditions as well as moderate to heavy physical demands related to manual labour with regular exposure to dirt, dust, oil, grease, noise, vibration, weather conditions, hazardous materials, chemicals and waste.

Upon final selection, the successful candidate will be required to provide, at their own expense, a clean Vulnerable Sector check from the Ontario Provincial Police or appropriate Police Force and a clean Driver’s Abstract.

Casual Operator

Reporting to the Director of Community Services, the Casual Operator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the parks, cemeteries and facilities.

This is a non-union position, based on a maximum of 24 hours/week to a maximum of 48 hours every 2 weeks as well as for occasional special projects, with hours being variable shifts. The rate of pay for this position is $18.22/hour.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of equipment, vehicles and materials used in municipal parks, cemeteries and facilities.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, the following certifications are required: Basic Refrigeration, Propane Handling & Safety, Chainsaw Safety Awareness and Fall Protection Awareness.
  • Possession of a valid “G” Driver’s License for the Province of Ontario is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of one (1) year experience in general grounds, building and equipment maintenance and six (6) months to one (1) year experience operating related parks equipment is preferred.
  • Ontario Recreation Facilities Association and/or Parks & Recreation Ontario coursework completion certificate(s) is preferred.

Public Works Department

Operations Manager

The Public Works Department is seeking a full time Operations Manager.

Reporting to the Director of Public Works, the Operations Manager leads the day-to-day operations of the Roads Department. Key areas of responsibility include road and bridge maintenance, fleet management and winter control operations. The Operations Manager plans, co-ordinates and monitors daily operations, ensures supervisory and safety components are met and responds to public inquiries on a regular basis. The Operations Manager is required to be on-call and work unusual/extended hours as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Certified Engineering Technician/Technologist (C. Tech./CET) from OACETT or Certified Road Supervisor (CRS-I, CRS-S) from AORS.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in progressively responsible related positions, including a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in the supervision of unionized staff and the administration of employment policies.
  • Valid “DZ” Driver’s Licence for the Province of Ontario.
  • An excellent knowledge of road infrastructure and maintenance activities.
  • A demonstrated knowledge of Digital Road Patrol software and AVL systems.
  • An excellent knowledge of related legislation, pertinent to roads construction and maintenance such as the Highway Traffic Act, Municipal Act, Technical Standard and Safety Act, OHSA, Minimum Maintenance Standards, Ontario Provincial Standards, Drainage Act, Fisheries Act, and Endangered Species Act.
  • A demonstrated knowledge of CVOR record keeping and renewals.
  • Excellent knowledge of roads department processes, procedures, policies, directives and guidelines.
  • Thorough knowledge of equipment, vehicles and materials used in roads programs and services.
  • A demonstrated management, organizational and leadership ability.
  • Excellent supervisory skills and competence in the interpretation and application of employment policies, regulations, acts, guidelines and a Collective Agreement (CUPE).
  • Proficiency and experience with Microsoft Office Suites and databases.
  • Flexible, adaptive and responsive to change.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A post-secondary education in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Certification in; Chainsaw, CPR/First Aid and/or Working at Heights, or a willingness to complete.
  • A knowledge of other Public Works operations.

Salary will commensurate with experience and skills.
