Building Inspector/Municipal Law Enforcement Officer (General)

This position is responsible for the application and enforcement of the Ontario Building Code, provincial legislation, all Municipal by-laws and other applicable laws in order to ensure compliance.

As a member of CUPE Local 4286, your hours of work will consist of 35/week, with an hourly rate of pay of $27.07. Earnings will be subject to Union dues.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of Grade 12 is required.
  • Certification in General Legal/Process, as set out by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and as per the Ontario Building Code is required.
  • Certification in House or Small Buildings as set out by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and as per the Ontario Building Code is required.
  • Willingness to complete additional Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and Municipal By-law certifications is required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in construction or a similar, related position.
  • Good understanding and knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and applicable Federal and Provincial laws as they relate to the use of and occupancy of buildings and land.
  • Good understanding of construction techniques and the ability to read and interpret plans and blueprints.
  • Ability to demonstrate skills in resolving contentious issues appropriately and effectively.
  • Communication, interpersonal and customer service skills to address requests, complaints and the ability to handle difficult situations.
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid “G” Driver’s Licence is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a three (3) year college diploma program in Civil Engineering Technology or Architectural Technology.
  • Possession of a Certified Building Code Official (CBCO) designation from the Ontario Building Officials Association, in the process of obtaining or willing to obtain.
  • Certification in Onsite Sewage Systems, Plumbing – House, HVAC – House as set out by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and as per the Ontario Building Code.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a Municipal Law Enforcement Officer.
  • Municipal By-law Certification.
  • Familiarity with Property and GIS Software.
  • A good understanding of Municipal By-Laws, The Provincial Offences Act, The Canada Evidence Act and The Ontario Courts of Justice

Certification in any of the following as set out by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and as per the Ontario Building Code is considered an asset:

    • Large Building
    • Building - Structural
    • Building - Services
    • Complex Building
    • Detection, Lighting and Power

Community Services

Casual Operator

We are currently accepting resumes for a Casual Operator for the Community Services Department.

As part of the Community Services Department team, the Casual Operator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the parks, cemeteries and facilities.

This is a non-union position, based on a maximum of 24 hours/week to a maximum of 48 hours every 2 weeks as well as for occasional special projects, with hours being variable shifts. The rate of pay for this position is $18.54/hour.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of equipment, vehicles and materials used in municipal parks, cemeteries and facilities
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, the following certifications: Basic Refrigeration, Propane Handling & Safety, Chainsaw Safety Awareness and Fall Protection Awareness

PARKS Summer Students

Student Arena Attendants

We are currently accepting resumes for Student Arena Attendants for the Minden Hills Community Services Department.

Student Arena Attendants provide support and a variety of maintenance operations for the department. The positions are wide ranging, encompassing all areas of the recreation facility with the exception of the Ice Plant. Duties and responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting in cleaning, sanitizing and monitoring dressing rooms, hallways, stands, end zones, lobbies, Community Hall and Gym

  • Enrolled in, or returning to High School, or a Post-Secondary Institution
  • Knowledge of hockey and ability to skate is preferred
  • Experience working with children is an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid/CPR (Level C), or a willingness to complete
  • Demonstrated good communication, attitude, skills and knowledge for the position

MHCC Summer Students

We are currently accepting resumes for two (2) Summer Student (Heritage Interpreter) positions for the Minden Hills Cultural Centre for a 16 week period from May 9 to August 27, 2021.

This is an excellent opportunity for a student sincerely interested in Canadian history. Working directly with Curators, this position will be of superior benefit to anyone who is in museum studies. Duties include (but are not limited to): assisting with developing and delivering public programming, wearing time period clothing while demonstrating living history activities, public speaking while touring, working with the permanent collection, gardening and cleaning.

Minden is located in Haliburton County, 3 hours north of Toronto. The positions are based on a 35 hour work week, Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM with a ½ hour unpaid lunch. The rate of pay is $15.00 per hour, pending 2022 budget and grant funding approval.

Students must meet Young Canada Works (YCW) Eligibility Requirements:

  • are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non- Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
  • are legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • will be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
  • will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program;
  • have been a full-time student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW assignment; and
  • intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW

Preference will be given to those with experience in art, history, museum studies, theatre, tourism, environmental studies or museum/gallery administration or related combination. Good public speaking skills and ability to work independently are required.

Public Works

Equipment Operator (Temporary Full Time)

Reporting to the Director of Public Works, the Equipment Operator provides a variety of construction activities, snow/ice removal, maintenance and repair services to roads, bridges, culverts, drainage and other road works maintenance for the Roads Department.

This is a temporary, full time position, based on a forty-two (42) hour work week, with hours subject to change seasonally. The current rate of pay is $25.24/hour as per the LOCAL 4286 Collective Agreement – Schedule “A”. This is a union position and earnings will be subject to Union dues.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Grade 12.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience operating at least two (2) of the following: Backhoe, Loader, Grader, Excavator in addition to a Tandem axle truck or Single axle truck.
  • Thorough understanding of road construction and maintenance procedures.
  • Possession of and ability to keep a class D’Z’ Endorsement Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience operating a grader, or willingness to complete the required training.
  • Preference will be given to those candidates whose experience includes tandem axle truck.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook (email).
  • TJ Mahoney Road School coursework certificates.
  • Surface Miner training (or willingness to obtain).

The following are considered Assets for the position:

  • Chainsaw training.
  • Certification in the Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7.
  • First Aid & CPR/AED.

The position requires the operation of equipment and undertaking of construction and maintenance projects in extreme weather conditions as well as moderate to heavy physical demands related to manual labour with regular exposure to dirt, dust, oil, grease, noise, vibration, weather conditions, hazardous materials and chemicals.
